Imagine a place where the whispers of the wind through ancient trees tell tales older than time itself, where the ocean’s melody harmonizes with the songs of native birds, and the nights are blanketed by a celestial display that seems almost magical. Welcome to Great Barrier Island, an unspoiled paradise that promises adventures unlike any other.

An Island Steeped in History and Mystery

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away—well, not that far, it’s just off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand—Great Barrier Island stood as a silent guardian of natural beauty and untamed wilderness. This island, known to the Māori as Aotea, has a history as rich and diverse as its landscapes.

From ancient Māori settlements to European explorers seeking fortune and adventure, Great Barrier Island has seen it all. The old kauri dams, relics of the once-thriving logging industry, now stand as silent witnesses to the island’s storied past. Walking through these historical sites, you can almost hear the echoes of the past—if you listen closely enough.

Nature’s Playground

Great Barrier Island is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The island is a mosaic of stunning landscapes, from rugged mountains and lush forests to pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Each corner of the island offers a new adventure, a new story waiting to be discovered.

Hiking Trails: A Walk Through Paradise

For those who find solace in the embrace of nature, the island’s numerous hiking trails are nothing short of a dream. The Aotea Track, a three-day journey through diverse terrains, offers breathtaking views and an immersive experience in the island’s natural beauty. As you trek through dense forests and climb steep ridges, you might encounter native birds like the cheeky kākā or the melodious tūī.

Shorter trails, like the Harataonga Coastal Walk, provide equally enchanting experiences. This trail, winding along the coast, presents panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the chance to explore secluded coves and beaches.

Water Adventures: Dive into the Blue

The surrounding waters of Great Barrier Island are a playground for marine enthusiasts. Snorkeling and diving reveal a vibrant underwater world teeming with life. The island’s marine reserves are home to an array of species, from colorful reef fish to majestic rays and even the occasional dolphin pod.

Kayaking along the island’s coastline offers a unique perspective of its natural beauty. Paddle through serene bays, explore hidden sea caves, and perhaps even encounter some of the local marine wildlife.

Stargazing: The Island’s Celestial Show

When the sun dips below the horizon, Great Barrier Island unveils one of its most mesmerizing spectacles—the night sky. Recognized as one of the few Dark Sky Sanctuaries in the world, the island offers an unparalleled stargazing experience.

Far from the light pollution of the mainland, the night sky here is a canvas of countless stars, planets, and galaxies. Lay back and let the universe reveal its wonders. The Milky Way stretches across the sky, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a shooting star.

Local Culture and Community

Despite its remote location, Great Barrier Island boasts a vibrant and close-knit community. The locals, or “Barrierites,” are known for their warmth and hospitality. Visiting the island, you’ll quickly feel like part of the family.

Explore the local markets, where artisans and growers share their crafts and produce. From handmade jewelry and pottery to fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, there’s a treasure to be found in every stall. The island’s community events, often centered around music and art, provide a glimpse into the island’s rich cultural tapestry.

Sustainable Living: A Way of Life

Great Barrier Island is not just a paradise for adventurers; it’s a model for sustainable living. With no mains electricity, the island relies on solar power, wind turbines, and other renewable energy sources. Rainwater harvesting and composting toilets are commonplace, showcasing a way of life that harmonizes with nature.

Wildlife Encounters

The island’s unique ecosystem is home to a variety of wildlife, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the presence of rare species like the North Island robin and the pāteke (brown teal). The island’s pest-free sanctuaries, such as Glenfern Sanctuary, are dedicated to preserving these precious species.

On land, you might encounter the friendly pūkeko (swamp hen) or the elusive New Zealand falcon. In the waters, the sight of playful seals basking on the rocks or the graceful glide of a stingray is a common yet thrilling experience.

A Call to Adventure

Great Barrier Island is not just a destination; it’s an invitation to step back in time and reconnect with the natural world. It’s a place where adventures are not confined to the pages of a book but are lived and breathed with every step you take.

So pack your bags, lace up your boots, and prepare to be enchanted by the unspoiled paradise that is Great Barrier Island. Whether you’re hiking through its verdant forests, diving into its azure waters, or simply gazing at its starlit skies, the island promises an adventure that will stay with you long after you’ve left its shores.

The Great Barrier Island is located about one hundred kilometers from Auckland itself and is part of the Auckland region and governed by Auckland Council. Although it is larger, it is very sparsely populated. It is home to a mere 950 people. And all this population is concentrated in small coastal villages. The largest settlement on the island is the village of Trifena, which is located in the southwesternmost part of the island. But life on the island has its own peculiarities and differs from the life on the “mainland” or for example on the island of Wijhek, where the infrastructure is well established. The standard of living here is relatively low compared to the national average, there is no electricity, and the locals get electricity from generators, solar panels and windmills. There are no electric lights on the streets of the villages. There are three elementary school on the island, but no secondary schools and so children either study on the “mainland” or are educated in correspondence schools. There are no banks, ATMs or supermarkets. But there are stores where you can buy everything you need, fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, bread and gasoline, which is also sold directly in the stores. But the island has police, fire department (fires are considered the biggest danger here), medical center, cab service, nature protection department.

There are few roads on the island and they are all winding, not paved and without a center line. If you drive on the road, you just have to stick to the left side and that’s it. But for us it is not surprising, as we have a lot of roads without center markings. There is no public transportation here, but you can rent a car. There are two airfields on the island where planes from Auckland and Tauranga land. The Great Barrier Island is only a 35-minute flight from Auckland. But if you get to the island by water, it will be much longer than four and a half hours. To the Great Barrier Island several times a week there are high-speed ferries, both passenger and cargo.

The climate on the island is subtropical, the same as in Auckland, but more windy, and the flora is unique and diverse. There are rare plants and many birds. Rare species of ducks, brown teal, black petrel, and the beautiful kaka parrot live in the natural environment. But there are no introduced pests that affect the local ecosystem, there are no possums, weasels, ferrets, hedgehogs, deer, wild goats. Therefore, the flora of the island remains untouched and pristine. And those forests that were destroyed by people for decades have been restored.

And it is also said that strange phenomena happen to visitors to the island, although it doesn’t happen to everyone. They find themselves in some strange and incomprehensible state. There is a continuous feeling of peace, well-being, and everything around seems so beautiful. Suddenly you forget about your problems, about your past life, you don’t want to be interested in the press, the Internet, television or anything else. You want to wave to every car you see and stop and chat with every person, just like that, about nothing.

There are only two airlines flying from downtown to Great Barrier – Fly My Sky and Barrier Air.

The flight is in tiny airplanes that only seat 8 people. The pilot looked very tired, and on top of that, he also flew us back. Is there really only one pilot? That’s why he was tired – to fly 6 times a day back and forth.

Before the flight they give you headphones and slam the door firmly shut. The whole time in the air (which is half an hour) you can take photos and videos and enjoy the views.

We fly very low over the Earth: Auckland, Waiheke Island and other small islands of the Hauraki Gulf pass quickly below us.

Great Barriere Island looks ominous from above. But it actually looks a lot like one of those tropical islands in the Pacific – Tonga, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Tahiti, or Moorea.

The temperature is consistently as much as 4 degrees higher than Auckland. And after all, the island is only about a hundred kilometers from the main landmass.

How much does it cost to live and where to find food

Like everywhere else in New Zealand, there are hostels, campgrounds, and more expensive places.

  • A bed in a hostel 40-45 NZD;
  • A place for a tent on a camping site 20-25 NZD;
  • Rent a car 60 NZD per day.

As I’ve already written, food is hard to find. It is important to get the time right, because every cafe has its own schedule and on weekdays almost all places are closed.

On the island there are 3-4 stores and 2 gas stations.

The main towns on the island are:

Claris – where the airport is located. It is about in the center of the island. Nearby there is a gas station with a store and one coffee shop.

Trifina is the “largest” island town. It is located in the south of the island. It even has the island’s only Irish Currach bar. It’s also where most of the stores and eating places are concentrated.

Port Fitzroy is a lonely village on the west of the island. Diving tours and boat trips, fishing, etc are organized from here. There is 1 mini store there and a place that sometimes sells burgers.

A huge beach, a campsite, and a walking trail for several kilometers along the coast can be seen in Harataonga Bay. From the campsite, the road goes north among the rocks. Along the way, which takes 4-5 hours, there are very small hidden beaches with absolutely no one.

Harataonga is a sandy bay located on the northeast coast of the island and is a must-see when traveling to the island. The bay is protected by Dragon Island, which is an ideal place for swimming and snorkeling. At both ends of the beach there are rocks suitable for fishing.

There is a DOC campsite in front of the beach. You can park near the campsite, walk down through the gate on the right or through the DOC campsite across the estuary to reach the beach.

This is also the start of the coastal path from Harataonga to Wangapua.

Places of interest

  • Coastal path;
  • Secluded;
  • gravel road;
  • Camping;
  • Fishing;
  • Snorkeling;
  • Oyster catchers;
  • Dotterels.

Whangapua and the adjacent New Chums Beach (Wainuioto Bay) have serious and well-deserved beach power for domestic and international visitors. New Chums Beach has been ranked among the top 10 beaches in the world to visit, and Whangapoua Beach with its convenient access is a strong contender among beautiful beaches.

Wangapua and the adjacent New Chums Beach (Wainuioto Bay) have serious and well-deserved beach power for domestic and international visitors. New Chums Beach has been ranked among the top 10 beaches in the world to visit, and Whangapoua Beach with its easy access is a strong contender among beautiful beaches.

Whanagapoua Beach is a safe, long sandy beach that stretches for 1.5 km. The northern end of Whanagapoua Beach is the starting point for access to New Chems Beach. This long, white sandy beach is a popular surfing spot and a nature conservation area on the northeast coast of the island. The estuary runs through the Okivi Basin to the southern edge of the beach. It offers incredible views of Hirakimata and Rakitu Island.

There are no buildings, roads, infrastructure, or campsites on the protected stretch of unspoiled land – it’s a jewel in New Zealand’s coastal crown. From the northern edge of Wangapua Beach, cross the creek to begin the walk along the rocky coast and over the headland. The 1-kilometer-long Wainuiototo Bay, or New Chum Beach, is about a 30-40 minute walk along Mangakahia Drive over the saddle through the spectacular Nikau Forest and giant p-o-hutukawa.

The William Mangakahia Lagoon Preserve has a public restroom and parking. Please remember to leave only footprints, take out all your waste, and bring water for your walk.

Port Fitzroy is located on Great Barrier Island on the northern part of the island, a five-hour ferry ride from Hamer Street Terminal in Auckland’s Wynard neighborhood.

There is no public transportation on Great Barrier; however, there is a local bus service in the area and a people and mail bus departs Port Fitzroy daily around 11am to the southern tip of the island (however, please note there is no same day return). We recommend booking a transfer in advance if you are traveling on foot.

Mooring facilities

There is not much space at the Port Fitzroy pier, so there is no ticket office. A little further up the road there is a general store (where you can buy tickets), a boat club and an information desk. During peak hours, you will also find The Hub burger bar, which serves traditional Kiwi burgers and takeaways. There is a gas station and dive station on the pier. Restrooms are just up the road by the general store.

The surrounding area

Just a short walk from the ferry you’ll find Department of Conservation (DOC) hiking trails such as the Old Lady Track (45 minutes), which has a side trip to Lookout Rock with amazing views of Port Fitzroy Harbor. It’s a steep 30-minute walk (marked) to the top.

Traveling on my own bike

Yes; you can travel on your bike for a small fee. Check luggage, bikes and pets. A crew member will tell you where to park it for the duration of the sailing.

Check in

If you are returning or have booked an off-island ferry, you can stay in your vehicle and one of our team members will meet you at your vehicle and check you in.

To ensure a seat on our ferry, we recommend booking in advance as vehicle spaces may fill up.

All passengers and vehicles traveling to/from Great Barrier Island in vehicles must give at least 60 minutes notice before departure. Passengers traveling without a vehicle (walking) must report at least 30 minutes prior to departure. Due to loading requirements, boarding will be closed 20 minutes prior to departure for vehicles and 15 minutes prior to departure for pedestrian passengers. SeaLink reserves the right to refuse boarding after this time.

Driving my car on the ferry

If you are traveling from the Great Barrier Island, you will need to board the ferry in reverse. If for some reason you are unable to reverse your vehicle, our friendly team can help.
